The GAP Geriatric Assessment Program is a free medical assessment program for older adults 60+. GAP is funded by the Nevada Aging and Disability Services Division and has provided this important service to older adults and caregivers for nearly 10 years. The program provides a “no wrong door” approach to senior healthcare. The evaluations include: Fall prevention, memory loss, mobility, current & past illnesses, depression & emotional health, impaired vision/hearing, nutritional concerns, medication review, home safety, caregiver network/services, functionality/daily living activities and recent or impending life changes.

Clients are assessed by a team of the finest Geriatricians, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists and Nurses in Southern Nevada. Julie Zacharias Simpson, DO of Touro University Nevada leads the GAP team.  Robyn Otty, OTD, OTR/L, BCPR, FAOTA  also serves as the Touro University Nevada’s Program Director for the School of Occupational Therapy.

The team is completed with Nevada Senior Services’ professionals, Linda Holpuch, RN, BSN and Marcy Cherek, MSW, LSW who both have extensive experience with medical and geriatric populations. “We look at the whole person” states social worker Marcy Cherek, “What are their needs and concerns, what are the family/caregiver’s needs and concerns?” Health Services Coordinator, Linda Holpuch, RN shared,” GAP is such an important resource in the community. We don’t always have answers to all issues, but participants leave with increased knowledge, direction and reassurance of how to proceed with their care.” GAP Program Manager, Ellen Grossman shared, “ We had to quickly adjust to the pandemic and switch our programs to telehealth and now we realize that telehealth is here to stay- even after the pandemic”. Ms. Grossman continues “If we think about it in a positive way, this is a wonderful opportunity to help people stay connected just by learning Zoom. Whether if it is for a medical visit for a homebound or rural senior, a wellness activity or a friendly zoom visit to see a new grandchild or connect with someone you love. We are so happy to be part of these new connections.”
